Bringing India’s Design Vision to the World: The Amsterdam Barber Company Project
At Atelier Astil, we are proud to showcase our ability to bring India’s design legacy to the global stage. The Amsterdam Barber Company project, designed by our Principal Architect and Founder, Arpita Sharma, is a perfect example of how we seamlessly blend contemporary industrial design with the timeless elegance of heritage architecture. Located at Prinsengracht 242, 1016 DN Amsterdam, Netherlands, this barbershop redefines modern grooming spaces while respecting the rich historical context of its location along Amsterdam’s iconic canals.
The challenge was to take a classic canal-side heritage building, with its original brickwork and tall windows, and transform it into a cutting-edge, industrial yet welcoming environment. Arpita’s vision for this 1,100 sq. ft. space combined sleek, minimalist design with bold industrial materials—blackened steel, polished concrete, and distressed leather. The result is a space that is both edgy and refined, modern yet timeless.
The design of Amsterdam Barber Company reflects Arpita Sharma’s commitment to creating spaces that balance beauty and function. Custom-designed furniture, minimalist interiors, and carefully curated lighting ensure that the space feels both stylish and comfortable. Each design element, from the marble-based mirrors to the bespoke coffee bar, was meticulously planned to align with Arpita’s vision for the space, creating an atmosphere that feels elevated, sophisticated, and practical.
Strategic space planning allowed for optimal use of the building’s proportions, making sure every corner of the barbershop contributes to its unique ambiance. The monochromatic tones, complemented by warm lighting, invite guests into a space that is as luxurious as it is welcoming.
This project represents Atelier Astil’s global vision—where Indian design sensibilities are elevated to meet the demands of international standards. Under Arpita Sharma’s direction, the Amsterdam Barber Company is a prime example of how we create exceptional, impactful spaces that leave a lasting impression across the world.
